Maxwell House ground coffee is ranking high on the Amazon’s best seller list – currently (May 2022) it is ranked 7th among ground coffee brands. If you prefer the low acid coffee variety, you may have noticed that the Maxwell House Lower Acid coffee isn’t available neither on Amazon nor at any other internet vendor. It seems that Maxwell House Low Acid has been discontinued, at least temporarily. Let’s have a look what to pick instead.
Have you tried dark roast?
Is there an alternative for Maxwell House low acid?
If you like the flavor of Maxwell House and suffer from heartburn you may want to try Maxwell House Dark Roast. Dark roasts generally have the lowest acidity due to the longer roasting process. Of course the primary goal of having various roasts is flavor and not the acidity or other chemical properties of coffee.
Why is dark roast less acidic?
Low acid coffee brands tend to have weaker flavor compared to regular coffee and the reviews reflect that. Some customers love the health benefits of the coffee, other complain about the taste. Unfortunately the taste of coffee is strongly dependant on the presence of the natural chlorogenic acids (CGAs) found in the coffee beans.
During the roasting process the amount of acids decreases with time. Longer roasting process produces darker roasts with less acidity. If you prefer less acidic coffee, dark roast may be the right coffee for you.
What are the Maxwell House pH levels?
Coffee lovers frequently ask about the pH levels of various (low acid) coffee brands. While this question seems legitimate, it doesn’t make much sense. The chemical composition of brewed coffee including the amount of caffeine and chlorogenic acids (CGAs) depends on three factor: the coffee beans, processing after harvest and the brewing method. As a side note: CGAs determine coffee acidity, the acidity and the caffeine levels determine if the coffee upsets your stomach or not.
The manufacturer controls the beans selection and the post-harvest processing, you choose how to brew your coffee. Picking only arabica beans grown on low altitudes contributes to the lower acidity by the bean selection. Roasting the coffee dark or treating the beans in order to eliminate some part of the acidity falls into the processing category. Making an espresso or a filter coffee belongs to the brewing part. The final result, i.e. the flavor and pH of the cup of coffee depends on all three factors (source).
How to make Maxwell House coffee less acidic?
Choose a coffee brand that you like, it doesn’t make sense to drink coffee without enjoying it. If you like Maxwell House, that’s fine. Pick either a low acid variety or dark / French roast for lower acidity beans (ground or not). Choose a brewing method resulting in lower acidity of your cup of coffee, e.g. the cold brew method.
